24fps 2008

24fps

Since its inception in 1999, the 24fps Short Film Festival has presented programs of short films by aspiring and established artists from across North America. The juried competition is open to any work made outside the major worldwide film studio system, and provides cash awards to the festival's top films in six major categories.

From 1999 to 2005 the festival was known as WESTfest. In 2001, the scope of the submission field was expanded to include international entries, and in 2006 the festival was officially renamed 24fps with the "International Short Film Festival" title officially attached.

Designed to showcase student and independent filmmakers, the competition is open to anyone, with no entry fee required. Twenty Official Jury Selection films are chosen from the entry field, and then screened publicly in competition over the course of two programs. (October 24-25, 2008). Submitted projects must have been completed after January 1, 2005. The film's running time must not exceed 20 minutes.

Festival Director Barry Smoot, who also serves as the Paramount Artistic Director, says 24fps "was created to encourage aspiring filmmakers and give them a unique, landmark theatrical setting to showcase their work. As a nationally recognized historic theatre, we are dedicated to preserving and celebrating the cinematic art form. It seems only fitting that we have a hand in encouraging its future as well."

Entries are encouraged at every level of experience. Smoot said, "We charge the Official Jury to look at each film independently, and ask them to consider how it communicates to them individually. Method of production is less important. We ask them to consider how the artist has used whatever tools available to communicate their vision."

24fps 2008 to introduce a new "Young Filmmaker's Showcase"

This year's festival will include a simultaneous competition for filmmakers age 13 to 18. Films accepted into the YOUNG FILMMAKERS' SHOWCASE compete for a $500 Young Filmmaker's Prize. (The films are also still eligible for the major competition cash awards). Public Exhibition of these films will take place Saturday, October 25, 2008. If you are interested in this showcase, email the Festival Director, Barry Smoot at bsmoot@paramount-abilene.org for more information.
